SHE'S THE MAFIA.

CHAPTER 11.
SURPRISE! SURPRISE!

Janet’s POV

My hands were locked on my belly and head was slightly down as I stared at Olivia through my thick lashes while she stared back at me like I’d grown horns on my head. I gulped, my throat itching and it felt like I’d been thirsty for ages. Minutes had passed since Vero revealed everything about me to her, but she hadn’t spoken a word yet. I’m scared, and why not? Olivia belongs to a wealthy powerful family, which means it will take her a snap to have me locked up behind bars for God knows how long. I cleared my throat and, with the remaining courage, I inhaled the air to speak but she cut me off by letting out a whine. I frowned and instantly exchanged a look with Vero. We both couldn’t get her reaction.

“Oli-

“God, you guys are horrible!!” She slammed her palms on her face and groaned before she slid them down harshly, pulling her skin along, “I had a break-up with my boyfriend and you both are pulling up these stupid jokes!!” I blinked and looked at Vero who has the same expressions as me. “Alright, you went on a trip without me. I understand. But do you guys really have to make this lame excuse?”

I sighed and kicked all the stress away, “I know it sounds unbelievable and a lame joke but it’s true, Liv!” I paused, “I am Charlotte William. The business tycoon and the most ruthless mafia mistress of Campania!” She rolled her eyes, still not believing me.

Vero groaned, “Olivia, trust me, she’s telling the truth! We weren’t on any trip or anything. I was actually abducted!!” Her expression changed and she stared me in the eyes without a blink. Her change of breathing and expressions confirmed me that she has now realized that none of us are lying! “I’m sorry that I kept it a secret but I didn’t want to put any of you in any danger and... I didn’t want to lose such friends like you both either! If possible, then please do try to forgive me for that!” She opened her mouth but no words came out. Of course, anyone would go speechless after knowing such a thing.

“And if you still don’t believe her, then get yourself proved by the sexy Italian accent that slips out of her tongue and her parents who she never mentioned!” Said Vero.

“So, our best friend is a- She paused and Vero nodded, “Yup! She’s The Mafia!” I stood there timidly, waiting for her reaction, but she surprised me by screaming out loud like a crazy woman. My eyes widened, “She’s screaming out in horror, right?” I asked Vero, but she was just as in same shock as I was.

Olivia stopped screaming and looked at me with a huge grin, “You are a mafia?” She asked me, her eyes sparkling and cheeks reddened by the lungs ripping out scream. I smiled awkwardly at her, baffled. I thought she would get mad at me, or get scared of me, or perhaps would throw me behind bars. But her reaction has surprised the fuck out of me. She excitedly grabbed my forearms and widened my eyes once again, “I want to know everything about you!”

“Uh, of-of course!” I smiled, “I-I will tell you everything. I promise!” She gasped and took me in a tight hug. I blinked, and hugged her back.

And here I thought she would kick me out!

She pulled away and bombarded me with her questions, “How rich are you? Do you live in a castle or mansion? What sort of stuff do you do? Why would you live in this creepy house when you have a whole country under your little finger? Why would you change your name? Who’s this Valentino? How many siblings do you have? Can you shoot? Can you fight? Do you also have these handsome full-dressed bodyguards around you like the K Dramas we watch? Why would you leave such a life? Oh, are you on a mission? Or you’re hiding from the police or someone who wants you dead? Why would you-

“STOP!!” I shouted, jerking my hand out of grip. Her eyes widened and she pressed her lips together in guilt when she realized how unbelievable she was to me. I huffed audibly and put my hand on my head due to the stress, but then my hand was removed and head was snapped on Vero, who had broke into an explosion of laughter that resonated throughout the hallway.

“It’s not funny, Vero!” I said, glaring at her, but then Olivia joined her. I tightened my jaw, trying not to laugh, but eventually I gave up and burst into laughter with them. I was glad that Olivia didn’t shut me off or become mad at me, but what made me more happy was their kindness and loyalty towards me. My truth didn’t change anything. In fact, it appears like my revelation has turned our bond stronger. Although, it’s senseless!

I stood there, hands holding the towel wrapped around my figure and tiny drops of water sliding down my neck and forehead as I stared at my wardrobe with a slight frown between my brows. I usually don’t care about my outfits and wear whatever my eyes see first, but as today’s going to be my first day at work, I was taking my time in choosing something presentable, but unfortunately, I had nothing good to wear. I groaned, “Goddammit!” I gave up and grabbed a grey pencil skirt and white shirt, putting’em on hurriedly, I quickly dried my hair then did my usual nude make-up. When done, I looked at myself in the mirror head to toe and appreciated the work of God. No matter what I wear, I always look so fucking hot! I smirked and grabbed all the necessary stuff before I headed out and greeted Vero, who was watching TV with a bowl of corn in her lap.

“Morning!” I said, taking her eyes on me. Her eyes brightened seeing me. “Hey, good morning!” She placed the bowl on the table and took me in a hug. I chuckled, returning the hug, “Best of luck!” She said and pulled away.

I frowned, “Why?”

“Because you’ve never worked for anyone before!” I slightly frowned because since the day I left my home, I’d worked with no days off, in fact, done over shifts as well. She smiled, “I mean, considering what you were in your past? This job is going to be tough for you!”

“Maybe, but I think it’s not going to be as tough as the job of a waitress, at least!” We both chuckled. I took her hands in mine and smiled at her, “I’m heartily grateful to have you as my friend, Veronica Davis!”

“Excuse me? I’m your bestfriend, you idiot!”

I chuckled, “Yeah, my best-friend!”

“Take these!” I looked at the keys in her hand, then at her, “Nobody likes to get late on their very first day of work, do they?!”

“It’s your mum’s and you need it more!” I insisted on giving her back but she didn’t listen to me and put the keys in my hands, “Vero, I’ve got my cab out there. It’s ok!”

“What did I say earlier?” She shot her brows up, “We’re bestfriends! So, take it! Also, I have my driver for the rides!” She winked, “So, don’t worry about me!”

I smiled and took the keys, “Thank you!” I gave her a quick hug and walked away with a huge grin on my lips.

Today’s the best day of my life. Although I still got many issues on my plate but the fact that my best friends have accepted me and my dark past with open arms, I’m floating. Only I know how hard it was for me to keep my real identity a secret. I always wanted to tell them, always wanted them to love the real me, but the fear of being abandoned by them never let me. But now, I’m free. Free of the massive weight of all my lies and secrets. Also, I know that my revelation has put them in danger as well, but as long as I’m alive. I will make sure that no harm touches them! I hope that things go as normally as normal!!

My destination was the headquarters of Mr. Grey’s global enterprise. It’s a huge twenty-story office building, all curved glass and steel, an architect’s utilitarian fantasy. It’s a quarter to two when I arrive, greatly relieved that I’m not late as I walk into the enormous - and frankly intimidating - glass, steel, and white sandstone lobby.

Behind the solid sandstone desk, a very attractive, groomed, blonde young woman smiles pleasantly at me.

“I’m Mr. Grey’s new personal assistant,” I held my hand out to shake and added, “Janet Reyes!”

“Oh, good morning, Miss Reyes! I’ve been expecting you. Please, come with me,” She gestured me to follow her and I did, walking behind her with my hands locked over my belly, “As you’ve done an internship in the second most powerful enterprise in New York, I don’t think I need to explain to you your work or anything!” I smiled. She stopped in front of a desk that was right outside the boss’s cabin and looked at me, “Here’s your seat and the file with your duties written on it to follow!”

I smiled again, “Thank you!” And walked towards my chair but before I could take my seat she said, “I suggest you greet your boss with a cup of coffee before taking your seat, Ms. Reyes!” When I looked at her, she was holding a tray of cappuccino. I blinked, looking at the tray surprised because it wasn’t in her hands until now.

“Stella!” Said she, taking my eyes on her. I looked away and saw a girl. “She’s our maid here. Serves coffee and all but from today on. It’ll be your work!”

“Yes, sure!”

“The cafeteria is right there!” I looked at the way she was gesturing and smiled at her, taking the tray out of her hands, “Have a nice day. B’bye!” With this, she walked away. I adjusted the cup in the tray and exhaled the stress out. Don’t know why, but I was suddenly receiving these unwanted negative vibes. The cabin door in front of me was making me anxious. I shook my head, “Everything’s fine, Janet. Let’s go!” Saying this, I encouraged myself and started to the door with heavy breaths.

Knock! Knock!

I knocked twice on the door and after my boss allowed me in, I held the tray firmly and walked in, “Good morning Mr. Gr- My words were left in the air and eyes widened when I saw the person in front of me, “YOU?!!” I exclaimed, shock visible on my face.

He lazily leaned back in his chair and chuckled, “Surprise, surprise!” I frowned, not believing my eyes. He corner smirked, “I’m damn sure you didn’t see that coming, did you?”

“Paxton?” I didn’t call him, I cursed him. My jaw clenched and eyes ignited with his evil smirk, but keeping my anger at bay, I closed my eyes and exhaled, calming myself. Okay, you didn’t expect this but here, you guys are in a professional situation, Janet! Be cool and calm! He is your boss here. Respect him, obey him, don’t badmouth him-

“Get out!” I jolted open my eyes and shot my brow up. He got up from his seat and shouted at me, “GET OUT!!!” I was slightly startled by his roar. The smirk, the amusement, nothing was there. Just hatred and anger. I clenched my jaw, the tray almost breaking with my strong grip on it. His jaw tightened and eyes were red with fury. He folded his knuckles strongly and slammed them on his crystal table, “You do not want me to call my guards to kick you out, do you?”

“You can’t fire me for something that isn’t related to our professional lives!”

“I won’t repeat myself!”

I bit my lower lip, staring at him hopefully, but hell if he changed his mind. I nodded and left the tray on the ground. It broke into pieces and turned the floor all greasy and wet. He looked at the floor, then into my eyes. There was a shim of guilt in his eyes but that was gone within a nenosec.

“I wish I had never met you!” Saying this, I turned around and slammed the door shut aggressively behind me, walking away with indignation, “Bloody bastard!”
