OFF LIMITS.

CHAPTER 4.

Mia Pov

I had just got home with my groceries and was unpacking them when I heard my phone ringing. It's Claire.

"Hi, Claire, what's up?"

"You're 10 minutes late. Our boss is freaking out that you are not here."

I looked down at my watch to see it was 4:30 in the afternoon.

"Sh*t! I didn't even realise the time. Can you cover for me? Please, I'll be there in 5 minutes."

While I was still on the phone, I grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge. Then I grabbed my bag and walked out of my house, making my way to my car. I turned on my Bluetooth straight away then placed it on my phone holder so I could still talk to Claire.

"Girl you know I've got you."

In the background, I heard our boss Jeff yelling.

"Claire! Where is mia? She is 10 minutes late!"

"Oh uuh, she forgot to tell you she had a last-minute doctor's appointment," Claire explained.

"She better be here in the next 6 minutes or she is fired"

"Yes, sir, she will be here."

I heard the excuse Claire gave our boss. Claire didn't know that was the truth. I did have a doctor's appointment and then I ran to the shops.

'Mia, you better get here quick. I don't know if I'll be able to cover much longer."

"I'm already in the car on my way. I'll be there soon, I promise."

"Okay see you soon"

I ended the call and quickly but safely made my way to work. I guess it's a good thing I only live 5 minutes away from where I work. As I drove to work it was great there was no traffic at all which was good. Finally, I pulled into the parking lot finding a free spot then I parked the car.

I got out of my car, locking it behind me. I quickly pulled my hair back into a high ponytail then walked in the back.

I noticed Claire helping Zain who is new. Claire would never say it but I think she has a small crush on the guy. He's only been working here for a week.

"Hey Claire, I'm here. I'm so sorry I'm late"

"It's no problem for me but you should be saying sorry to Jeff"

"I know but first I'm going to put my stuff in the locker room"

I stepped into the staff locker room, walked over to my locker and opened it. As I placed my bag in my locker, my phone dinged. I pulled my phone out of my bag and read the text.

Gazing down at my phone my hair stood on end as my skin began to crawl with goosebumps as I saw the text that just emerged.

Shivers tormented my whole body as I read, 'You are a witch. Your is evil. I WILL FIND YOU!'

Just knowing that someone knows what I am, scares me down to my very core.

It was an unknown number so I didn't know who this text was from. But deep down I had this churning feeling in my stomach. I put my phone in my bag then closed my locker.

I took a deep breath, brushed myself off, putting on a smile as if nothing had just happened. Strolling out of the locker room, I went to find our boss. I can't lose this job. I need the money.

Walking down the hall I find Jeff in his office, typing away on his computer. He didn't notice I was standing in the doorway, taking a breath I knocked.

"Come in," he said as he didn't even lookup from his computer.

"Sir, I'm sorry I'm late"

When he heard my voice he immediately stopped typing and glared at me with a fierce look on his face.

"It is unacceptable. You know the rule. Never be late."

I stood there feeling sick and uncomfortable.

"I know...but"

"No, this is your last and only warning. If this happens again you will be fired."

"I understand sir, it won't happen again," I sighed.

2 hours later

I just came back into the kitchen from serving a customer, my stomach started swirling, I felt like I was going to be sick.

"Mia are you okay?" Claire asked.

"yeah… I'm fine. Just have a small headache and just a little lightheaded."

At work, I can't let it show. Now isn't the right time to tell anyone about my secret.

"Maybe you should sit down for a bit? You are a bit pale."

"No, No I'll be fine."

"okay if you say so. I'll be here if you need me"

"thanks"

"There are lots of orders coming in. The chief has finished and served up a few dishes."

"Yeah, I was just about to take them out."

"Here let me give you a hand."

We both carried two plates each, taking them to the customers and placing the plates down in front of them.

After serving many customers I noticed a woman staring at me. It made me feel a bit uncomfortable. She looked to be in her early 40s, with thick long brown hair, wearing a red dress. I have no idea why she is so interested in me. I'm nothing special. I walked over to the woman and spoke.

"Hi, is there anything you would like to order?" I asked.

The woman smiled at me, "I would love a glass of red wine please"

"Sure, anything else?" I asked.

Pausing mid-sentence, the woman noticed the locket the girl wore. Her memory drifted to a moment in her past when she’d given that very same necklace away during her time in hospital.

Tears filled her eyes at coming face to face with the newest owner after so many years. Happiness and joy were only one of many emotions she felt, and after one last glance, she hoped they would meet again one day.

"Excuse me?" I touched the woman's arm.

At that moment I could tell she was a witch like me. All witches can sense when another witch is around them by a single touch.

The woman cleared her throat, "umm, no that will be all thank you"

"okay coming right up"

I walked behind the bar, picked up a glass and poured in the red wine. Just as I finished pouring the wine, Claire came over to me.

"Hey, who's having the Red wine?" Claire asked.

"Oh, it's the woman over there sitting at the table near the exit. Have you seen her here before?"

Claire looked over at the table near the exit to get a good look at the woman.

"Hmm, yeah now that I think about it, she has been here a couple of times now. Her first time was on your day off Wednesday and today," Claire explained.

"Oh"

"Why do you want to know?" Claire asked.

"I don't know. I can sense she's a witch but there's something about her that I can't put my finger on."

I smiled at Claire then turned around walking towards the woman and placed the glass down in front of her.

As I started making my way back to the kitchen when two well-built guys started fighting.

The first guy wore a black shirt with a leather jacket and jeans. His dirty blonde hair was silk back with hair gel. He spoke in an irritated voice, "dude, I told you to stay away from my girl!"

The second guy wore a black singlet with denim jeans. He had a tattoo on his right shoulder, it looked like some sort of cross. His brown hair with blonde highlights was spiked.
He spoke in a deep husky voice, "you're not dating so that means she isn't yours."

Both of them continued arguing, I couldn't take it any longer. I'm not going to stand here and watch them tear this restaurant apart. So I took a breath and stormed over there.

"Hey! Knock it off"

Stranger 1, "go away little girl"

I took another step closer to them.

"Take whatever this is outside now!"

Stranger 2, "this has nothing to do with you. Leave us alone"

They both started punching each other, crashing into the tables, then one of them lifted the other guy and threw him on the ground. Everyone stopped eating as they peered at the racket that was happening.

As I watched them quarrelling, I noticed something strangely familiar about the way they fight. They both seem to have amazing strength and fast agility. But I couldn't put my finger on what it was.

As they were arguing, I heard them say Elijah's name, making me wonder who they were. Do they know him?

"That's enough! Both of you leave now!"

Both of them huffed and puffed, stomping their way outside. They stopped at the entrance door, turning around giving me a scowling stare. Just knowing that they have left is a relief so now everyone can enjoy their meals.

I walked over to tidy the table picking up their plates and cups then I made my way back to the kitchen placing them in the sink.

The rest of my shift went by quickly, it was 8 o'clock pm. I noticed the mystery woman was the last to leave. I still couldn't put my finger on why or who she is. It was time to lock up the restaurant.

Claire walked over to me, "hey, I'm heading out now"

"Okay, I'm going to take the trash out then I'll lock up," I replied.

"I can take the trash out for you"

"No, it's fine. It's my time to lock up," I said.

"Are you sure?" Claire asked.

"Yeah, oh and how is your mum?"

"Oh, she's fine... Dad has been overworking himself and she's nervous that if he continues he might get hurt," Claire explained.

"Oh he better take it easy or we will be driving up there to have a talk"

Claire laughed as she hugged me and walked out of the building. I strolled back into the kitchen grabbing the two garbage bags.

The smell of the garbage made me feel nauseous. I walked out the back door into the dark alley, over to the big bin and opened it, placing the trash in.

As I turned around I felt a hard thump on my head, the next thing I was laying on the cold dirty ground. My head was pounding like crazy, I tried to stand up but I was kicked in my back making my collapse back on the ground.

My vision started to dim as I tried to get a look at the person. But all I could see was a tall muscle guy wearing a black leather jacket with denim jeans walking away.

With all the strength I had in my entire body, I tried to do a spell to make the guy stop but I couldn't. I couldn't concentrate. My head hurts painfully and my entire body aches. I couldn't move, I tried to grab my phone from my back pocket but I couldn't. Then it all went black.
