Janet's POV
His hands on my waist and back were holding me tightly against his masculine body. Because of his unnecessary proximity, my eyes lit up and my body became hot. His face was close enough that I could count his eyelids. I grasped his shoulders tight, wrinkling his perfectly ironed blue coat. He was gorgeous, I’ve said it before, but his close-up look was even better. He was flawless and perfect. But what kept me caged and unable to move were his beautiful eyes. I blinked, staring into his eyes deeply. Unlike other brown eyes, his eyes have this strange light in them-light which represents positivity and mischief.
“Ahem, ahem!” He cleared his throat and that’s when I realised what I was doing. My eyes slightly widened and I gasped to find myself still in his hold.
Fuck!
I quickly freed myself from him and stood two steps away, feeling embarrassed for just not leaving him early but for staring at his eyes like a mad woman also.
“You okay?” He asked, adjusting his suit. I shot my brows at him, “Huh? Umm, yeah! Yup, I’m-I’m fine!” I over smiled, “Thanks to you!”
Stop overreacting, bitch!
When my subconscious yelled, I composed myself and smiled normally, locking my hands over my belly. He looked at me head to toe with his eyes and gave a nod before walking past me, towards the meeting room. I exhaled audibly, my hand on my pounding heart,“What just happened to me?” I turned around and watched him going away and away.
I narrowed my eyes at him, “This guy is indeed something else, Janet! You’ve never gawked at somebody like this before, never!” I shook my head, “No, Janet, no! You will not get into him again. He may seem like a nice person and things between you two have been sorted out with his apology, but he’s still the reason why your brother’s voice note is not with you anymore. Don’t forget that. And he’s your BOSS. Keep that in mind!” I closed my eyes and inhaled deeply, “Now, from today on. You will only and only work for him. You will not fall for his charms or anything... He’s your boss, Janet Reyes. Treat him like one!” I nodded to myself and gasped with wide eyes, “Huh, the water bottles?” I frantically turned around and rushed to the cafeteria.

It’s been two weeks-two weeks since I’ve been working for Paxton Grey. I thought it would be fun to work with him, considering our first meeting, but it appears that the person I met at the party is not the person I am working for. I mean, the one I met before was cool, blunt, mischievous, cute, funny, but this one is cranky, grouchy arrogant, boring, and downright cruel, especially to me. He makes me work like I’m some kind of robot built to serve only him without any rest. It doesn’t matter to him what the time is. He just calls in extreme urgency and makes me work through the night. In fact, he doesn’t even spare me on weekends! He just simply calls me anytime and orders me to complete the work which is not really necessary to be done immediately
Huh, I do everything he says, each and everything. For example, two days after I joined, he asked me to be at his office before him and also asked me to help him get his jacket off, right after he arrives. I mean, I didn’t know that helping the stupid jacket off was also a part of my fucking job! But I do it anyway because that’s how I function. No matter how hard the work is, or how much. I do it with my whole heart and always do my best, but one way or another, Paxton fucking Grey always finds a way to scold me, sometimes behind the walls or sometimes in front of everyone. But since I’m no longer Charlotte William, I don’t say anything to him. I listen to him with downcast eyes and apologize to him. It makes me feel good because, the more I see myself different from the real me, the better I will feel.
Well, I’ve become a friend of many people here. Yes, you heard it right. I have become friends with many people here, but no one is my friend. Not because they’re too annoying or don’t mind their own fucking business or keep meddling into my personal life or disturbs my personal space or does so many other things I hate, but because I am more than good with my two best friends
But here’s this one girl here who I try my best to stay away from. Catrina! Our floor manager. She is a talkative, uncivilized, dramatic queen who’s surprisingly everyone’s favourite. I don’t understand why everyone likes her. She’s obnoxious, clingy and a non-stop radio. I hate her. Also, there are many guys here who try their best to talk to me but I keep neglecting them. Not because they’re not my type, but because my slightest closeness to any guy here will only get them killed by my dear-never- going-to-be-my-husband, Valentino! Of course, if Valentino learns that someone’s hitting on me or trying to get close to me. He’ll kill him in cold blood!
“Miss Reyes?” Paxton’s call snapped my head up at him. I abruptly stood up and bowed to him, “Sir?”
“Were you daydreaming during work?” He asked in his harsh tone.
“Absolutely not! I was thinking about your next meeting, which is at- I paused when I saw the time on my wristwatch. It flashed quarter to 5, which meant the meeting was about to begin and I forgot to inform him. I pressed my lips together and looked at him with a sorry look.
“You’re hired here to assist me, but look at you!” He scolded and I just quietly looked down, “Next time I see you lost. I will fire you!” I nodded, still not looking at him. “Now, follow me!” He turned around and started walking to the meeting room. I quickly grabbed my essential stuff and followed him with clumsy steps.
“Reminding me of my meetings is your work, isn’t it?” He said, hands tugged in his pockets and head straight.
“My sincere apology, Mr Grey!” I matched his fast pace and added, “It will never happen again, I promise!”
“Promise?” He let out a dry chuckle, “You’ve been promising me to never repeat mistakes since your first day, Ms Reyes. But you’re utterly disappointing!” He suddenly turned around and caused me to bump into his chest. He clenched his jaw and I quickly backed away, apologizing to him even though it wasn’t my fault.
“Look at yourself. You’re clumsy, lazy, oblivious, obtuse, disappointing and uncivilized! I wonder why my father hired you, what he saw in someone as disappointing as you!” He said it all in one breath, looking into my hazel eyes with his raging brown ones.
I gulped.
Like I said earlier, one way or another, he always finds a way to scold me. Now, look at this one. Was there any reason to say those things to me? Absolutely, not! But he said those cruel words to me anyway. However, I know that a part of him is well aware that I’m the best assistant ever and he will never find someone as patient and tolerant as me. And whatever he said is not true, none of it but look at him!
I scoffed, rolling my eyes.
“Did you just roll your eyes at me?” When I looked at him, I realised what I’d just done. Uh oh, this was rude and highly intolerable. I shouldn’t have done that. I quickly shook my head, refusing to accept. “And now you’re lying to me!” he said. I became anxious. Oh God, Janet. Stop making him angry.
“No, I-I-I didn’t roll my eyes at you, Sir. It’s my bad habit!” He slightly frowned, “And I’m sincerely sorry that everyday I’m making it hard for you to tolarate me, but I’m trying, Mr. Grey!” I looked down. I don’t know why but I can’t look directly into his eyes, especially when he looks at me this way, “I’m trying my best to live up to your expectations! To hear ‘You did well’ from your mouth. Just give me time, Mr. Grey. I promise that I will not disappoint you then... Never!”
He inhaled deeply. There was a shim of softness in his eyes but it was replaced by hardness within a nenosec. “Let’s see!” Saying this, he stormed away. I heaved a sigh of relief and followed him, taking care not to crash into him if he turned again.

“To Vero!” Screamed Olivia and I before taking the shots of taquila with her. I was exhausted and was yearning to rest as today also hasn’t been any easy day at work but because Vero has finally got her law license, I sacrificed my sleep and came here to celebrate with her.
“I’m so happy, tonight!” She said, her voice slurpy because of the drinks she’s had tonight. “After 3 attempt... After 3 fucking attempts, I finally did it. I’m finally a lawyer!” She screamed the last line, getting everyone’s attention on her.
“Yes, you did it and we’re proud of you!” I held her wrists and smiled, “But you need to keep this happiness to us only because people around us doesn’t care!” She pouted, her legs were unable to keep her still due to the alcohol in her system.
“Why didn’t you invited, Sam?” Asked Olivia, who was also slightly high. Vero took her time before she replied, “I wanted to but he’s in England with his parents and will return next week!”
“And what about you, Olivia?” Hearing me, her glass of scotch lingered on her mouth and expression turned flat. She looked at me and I asked, “Did you talk with Charlie yet?”
“Why should I talk to him?”
“He’s your boyfriend, Liv. Sort out things with him and get back!”
“First, he was my boyfriend and second, I will rather die all alone than get back to that obsessed with bloody Paxton him!”
“They’re friends since childhood, Liv. What do you expect?” Said Vero, her eyes heavier than before but she kept them open by forcing her brows up. Olivia rolled her eyes, not enjoying this topic. I opened my mouth to say something more but couldn’t when my phone buzzed on the table. I picked it up and let out a heavy sigh.
“Don’t tell me that Paxton fucking Grey is again calling you over at such hour of night?” Said Vero, her eyes mo no longer heavy.
I smiled, “No, it’s not Paxton!” I looked at my phone once before I added, “It’s Lucas!”
“What’s he saying?” They both asked in unison by moving closer to me. My eyes slightly widened with their unnecessary curiousity. “Speak!”
I let out a low chuckle, “Well, he’s telling me about the stuff that you wouldn’t want to know!”
“Ah, you mean bad stuff?” Whispered Olivia and my smile shortened. She pressed her lips together and sat straight, “Sorry!” Her eyes barely looking at me.
“I wonder why I asked you to be honest with both of us!” Said Vero and earned herself a glare from Olivia.
“It’s okay, Vero! You both deserves to know my secrets. And Liv? He was asking me about the projects that I left incomplete because of my... I paused, unable to say that. I sighed, “Just know one thing, guys. I’m not into bad anymore!” An utter awkward silence coated the atmosphere. Nobody was saying a single word and nor any of us was drinking anymore. The atmosphere become thick and cold, only the sound of music and indistinct chatting of people could be heard. I couldn’t help but keep on repeating her words. They sounded offending and strangely painful. Were they really bad or I’m just over thinking?
“How’s it going with Paxton, anyway?” Asked Olivia, breaking the awkward silence between the three of us.
I replied, “I don’t know, I’m just giving my best to him but he always finds a way to humiliate me!” I sighed, “Sometimes it seems like he’s still holding grudges towards me but when I recall that just because I saved his father’s life, he didn’t just apologised to me but hired me back also! I shook away this thought and works for him mindlessly,” Olivia nodded but Vero had her eyes on me narrowed, “What?” I asked, lifting my shoulders up.
“You still think that he’s not taking any revenge on you?” I rolled my eyes, “My sweet Janet Reyes... That bastard is torturing you. Trust me!”
“You’re wrong, Vero!”
She frowned, “What?”
“Yes, I’m not the only one who’s been working day and night. He’s also as swamped as me! Yeah, he sometimes gives me work that seems utterly unnecessary to me and scolds me every next second but that doesn’t mean that he’s doing it all intentionally,” I paused, “I’ve seen him, Vero. He works so hard. Half of his day goes in attending meetings and all and other half goes in his cabin where he does his rest work. He doesn’t even gets time to eat, let alone torturing me! And speaking of his behaviour towards me. A fuck-load of work pressure makes you all grouchy. So, yeah! I hate him that he scolds me all the time even when I haven’t done anything but I don’t mind because it’s not his fault. It’s the fucking work that has turned him into that person!” Vero blinked, her mouth slightly hung open as she started at me mute. I smiled.
“You are unbelievable!” She stated, shaking her head in disbelief at me
“Unbelievable indeed!” Said Olivia, taking another shot.
I chuckled, “I’m not unbelievable, guys. I just understand his situation so well because I’d been through that pressure myself! I know how it feels when you’re surrounded with loads of work. You only and only wish to either burn it all and run away or finish it ASAP!” Vero nodded, understand my point.
“But what if we’re right?” Said Olivia, “What if he’s actually taking revenge on you?”
I clenched my jaw and replied, “Then I will make him regret calling me back!” They looked at eachother then before I added, “But it’s not true, right?” I smiled and grabbed the tiny shot from the table, followed by them.
They smiled back, raising the tiny shots in the air, “Right!” We clinked them together and gulped down the liquor before I placed the glass back on the table with my head replying Olivia’s word.
But what if he is...
