Paxton’s POV
I was doing my work quietly when I suddenly caught sight of Janet who was doing her work at her desk. I looked at her body posture from bottom to up and leaned back, forgetting that I was doing something. She was wearing a black pencil skirt that reached to her knees and a white top tugged in. Her hair was braided in a messy bun and few swirls were dancing on her face. I sighed. Say anything, but she is gorgeous as hell.
And weird also!
I shook my head at her in utter disbelief. God, no matter how badly I scold her or how much work I give her. She never complains, nor does she ever say a word. In fact, she apologizes to me and promises me to never repeat the mistakes she’s never made.
I sighed.
If it wasn’t about my best friend’s revenge, I would have appreciated her for being an excellent worker. Yes, she’s wonderful. She’s confident, enthusiastic, smart, polite, positive, and utterly perfect! No matter how rude or bossy I am to her, the smile never leaves her lips. I give her unnecessary work and keeps her swamped so that she becomes mad at me and gives me a reason to kick her out, but I don’t know how much endurance level she has that no matter what I do. At the end of the day, she finishes all the work and leaves me astounded.
I tilted my face, staring at her narrowed eyes, “You shouldn’t be so perfect, Ms Reyes! It’s bad for your health!” I muttered, just then my phone rang and snapped my head on it. It was Charlie. I smiled and picked it up, “Hey, wassup?”
“Where are you?” He asked, his voice sounding weak. I frowned and sat up straight, “What’s the matter, Lee? You okay?” There was a moment of silence before he cried out. And that’s when I understood that he’s drunk because Charlie only cries when he has alcohol in his system.
I rolled my eyes, “You’ve been drinking?”
“No,” he hiccuped, “I am drinking!” I put my fist on my mouth to control my chuckle and asked, “And why are you drinking?”
“Because I’m sad, dude!” My smile shortened, “I-I miss her!” He confessed and this time I didn’t see any fun in it, “Why doesn’t she come back to me?” He cried and my heart clenched because he’s been my best friend since 1st grade. I can’t see him crying this way. It hurts, damnit! It hurts like hell when someone you love cries this way!
I sighed, “Did you try calling her?”
“Why should I call her back, huh?” He asked back, “When she was supposed to take your side, she took that bitch’s!”
“What’s wrong with you, Lee? She took her side the same way took mine. Get it!”
“She was my girlfriend, Paxton! I should have been her first priority, not Janet!!”
“Lee-
“It’s all her fault, Paxton! It’s all that bitch’s fault!!”
“I disagree!” My eyes widened and I put my hand on my mouth.
“I’m sorry?”
I squeezed my eyes and slammed my fist on the table lightly, cursing myself for saying that out loud.
“Alright, you do not completely agree with me because I was the one who lost my temper first, I get it. But let me remind you, Paxton Grey, that if that bitch hadn’t slapped you, I wouldn’t have got dumped!” He yelled the last line aloud and hung up on me.
“I didn’t mean that, Charlie! Charlie? Charlie?” I looked at my phone and threw it on my table angrily. “Fuck!” I put my hands on my forehead and threw my head back agaisnt my chair.
“If the bitch hadn’t slapped you, I wouldn’t have got dumped!”
I took my hands off my forehead and looked at Janet through my glass window. She was busy with her stuff, not at all conscious about the damage she’s done to my best friend. I clenched my jaw, glaring at her to death. She shouldn’t be sitting there normally when my best friend is crying out there. I furiously picked up my telephone and called her in.
“You called me, sir?” She asked in her soft polite tone, standing across my desk.
“Nope, the machine started working itself and called you!” I mocked, but she remained quiet, which turned me angrier, “Of course, I called you!” I yelled aloud, widening her eyes with my sudden outburst. I opened my mouth to scold her more, but when she closed her eyes by tilting her head slightly lower, my heart hurt. She didn’t do anything, but yet she prepared herself to be scolded. My eyes softened and my mouth closed.
Paxton, NO!!
When my subconscious reminded me that, just like every time, instead of taking revenge, I ended up feeling ashamed of scolding her for nothing, I squeezed my eyes and turned to my desk, putting my palms on it as I lowered my head in disappointment. I don’t like scolding her, really, I just don’t. But when I recall that she’s the reason why my bestfreind broke up with his girl. I feel this anger building in me, anger that wants to make her suffer for his loss.
“Sir?”
I made an irrtated face, “Go get me 20 copies of the file placed on the table and the executive summary I asked you to make this morning!”
“Okay, sir!” Saying this, she left my cabin. I ticked my jaw, gripping the desk’s edge tight. “I called you back to make you suffer, Janet Reyes!” I turned around, facing the way she’d gone, “Let’s see how much can you endure me today!” I smirked.
A few minutes later, there was a knock on my door and after I allowed her, she walked in with the same positive smile on her face. “Here’s the copies and the summary you asked me to make.” I took the file and flipped the pages of the summary. It was written well and neatly but I snorted and tore its pages in front of her eyes.
“W-What are you doing?” She was shocked. Of course!
“Tearing your poor work!” I replied in my rude tone, keeping my face flat.
“Poor?” She repeated, her face was in utter shock but what made me happy was the anger in her eyes. She was angry!
“Yes, poor!” I threw the file in my trashcan and pulled my chair closer to my desk. “Go and create a better one!” I ordered, not looking at her. When she didn’t move, I looked at her and ordered aloud, “GO!!”
Without saying a word, she walked away. I smirked, for the first time in two weeks, I saw anger in her orbs. Maybe her endurance level had finally broken. I smiled brightly, feeling proud that I finally made her lose temper, but my misconception cleared quicker than I thought.
“What’s this?” I asked, looking at the tray of something green in her hands. She replied, “My secret,” She then placed the tray on my table and smiled brightly at me, “A Mint Tea!”
“I don’t like tea, Ms. Reyes!” What is she made up of, huh?
“I know, Mr. Grey. I’m your assistant, after all. But I brought this for you anyway because you seem fatigued and super stressed. This tea is the only remedy that has the best relaxing effects. It soothes the body and calms the mind. So... You should try it. I bet you, you’re gonna love it!”
Hearing her, my eyes softened and heart melted. Even after all my arrogance, she was being kind to me but keeping myself in character, I clenched my jaw and slammed my palms on the table, “Stop pissing the shit out of me, Ms. Reyes, and better do as you’re told!!” The sweet smile she was carrying flew away and a sullen look took place, “Go and get me my preferred coffee!” I commanded in a stern tone. She nodded and quickly left. I sighed audibly and leaned back on my chair, covering my face with my palms. “Why am I like this, huh? Why can’t I be a cruel boss like those movies and novels?” I removed my palms from my eyes and looked at the way she’d gone, “She’s so sweet, anyway!”
In no time, she was back with my preferred black coffee on her tray. I scoffed. No matter what I do, the shine of her sexy orbs never fades away. I’m taking my revenge on her, but her unbothered face makes me feel like she is the one taking revenge. I mean, the one being angry, grouchy and crazy is me, not her!! God, why doesn’t she get annoyed, or angry or offended, at least?!!
“Here’s your preferred coffee, Sir, and-” She unwrapped a packet of medicines and carried a pill forward to me, “Not the tea, but this will definitely help you!” She smiled and my heart melted again. I looked at the pill she was holding, then at her.
NO!! No, Paxton, no! Don’t melt for this bitch. Just don’t!
I narrowed my eyes at her, “Did I ask you for this?” She blinked, retreating her hand. “Lock this in your head, Ms. Reyes... DO-AS-I-SAY! Do not run your brain wheels. Understand?” She didn’t respond, “Ms. Reyes, do you understand?” My eyes went down and I saw her crumpling the packet of medicine.
I grinned inside. Yes, yes, that’s what I want! I want her to be angry. I want her to show me that I am torturing her and making it hard for her to stay. I want her to regret coming back. I looked back into her eyes, and trust me... My soul trembled!
I gulped. The look she was giving me was the same look she gave me before she slapped me. The atmosphere around us has become thick and cold. I could feel it in the air. I fisted my palm, trying to keep myself rigid as her deadly dazel was scaring the hell out of me. I think you shouldn’t have pushed her limits, Paxton. Look at her! She seems like she’ll eat you raw. Drive her away, Paxton. Drive her away before she kills you!!
“L-Leave!” I said, my eyes barely looking at her.
Hold on, why am I getting scared of a girl? I’m a guy, damnit. I shouldn’t be scared of her. Yes, I should not! I inhaled deeply and looked at her, regaining my composure but I couldn’t say anything when someone walked in and snapped our heads at him.
“Dad?” I grinned and got up from my chair, “Ha-Ha! What a present surprise?” He chuckled, walking closer to take me in a hug, but as soon as his eyes laid on Janet, who was standing next to my desk, he stopped and his face brightened up, “Janet?” He suddenly changed his track and took her in a warm hug, leaving me standing with hands in the air.
I blinked. What the hell?
“Oh, my dear! How are you?” He asked after they pulled away.
She chuckled, “I’m good Mr. Grey. How are you?” He replied, “I am also fine, dear. All thanks to you!” I ticked my jaw and let my hands down, feeling jealous because she didn’t just steal my hug but got his full attention too.
She smiled, “Don’t mention it, Sir!”
“Dad?” I called, but he shut me up with his palm at me. My eyes widened at his unexpected action. What the fucking hell?
“How was your vacation, dear?” He asked her in his blissed tone. I rolled my eyes, not enjoying my dad’s crazy interest in my assistant.
She knit her brows together, “Vacation?” Dad nodded. She looked at me and then back at my Dad. “I’m sorry, Mr. Grey, but I don’t know what you are talking about!”
“Didn’t you go on a vacation last week?”
“No! Why would I be going on vacation anyway? I mean-” She looked at me and smiled, “-It’s been only two weeks since I’ve joined here, Sir. Do you really think that Mr.Grey would ever allow me to take a leave this sooner?”
“I-I don’t get it!” He frowned in utter confusion and looked at me. And let me tell you, I was just as confused as Dad. I also couldn’t get anything she said, but don’t know why Dad was looking at me like I had an answer to that. I lifted my shoulders up as what then he asked, “You told me that you gave her whole two weeks to enjoy in hawaii?”
“Hawa- My words stuck in my throat and eyes widened when the realisation hit me. I looked at Janet and exclaimed, “She was the one who saved you?” Pointing my index finger at her. My Dad looked at her and then at me, “Don’t tell me that you thought it was Ms. Wolfe?” My mouth hung open and I was drowned in guilt.
Paxton fucking Grey... WHAT DID YOU DO?!!!
